Emphasis is placed both on personal safety and on simple, commonly used skills. Scenarios will provide an opportunity for participants to practice their skills both individually and within a team/group context.
Objectives:
- Promote proactive prevention of river accidents and injuries.
- Develop and practice key self-rescue skills.
- Identify and avoid river hazards by understanding hydrology, hazards, and river features.
- Focus on fast, low-risk strategies for early management of river accidents
- Develop and practice methods for recovering swimmers, and loose boats and equipment
- Develop and practice more advanced rope-based and in-water skills
- Gain experience using the rescue PFD, and understand it’s strengths and weaknesses
- Utilize rescue scene management principles needed within a paddling group |
Fundamentals of Canoe/Kayak Camping
Instructor: Dirk Dixon & Karl Martz
Telephone: 717-566-4994
Date: Saturday, June 9, 2012
*** NEW THIS YEAR ***
Saturday, 9 June, 2012 - Location: Shank Park, Bullfrog Valley Road, Hershey
Enjoying or enduring a canoe trip depends heavily on preparation. Dirk Dixon and Karl Martz will share the techniques and knowledge learned from 25 years of successful CCGH wilderness trips. Special emphasis will be placed on basic gear selection, how to set up a dry camp and simple cooking techniques. This event may be of special interest to those intending on participating in the overnight Juniata River trip planned for June 23-24.
Saturday-Sunday, 23-24 June, 2012 - Juniata River Overnight Canoe/Kayak Camping, River Classification: I
This is a trip for anyone interested in practicing the skills needed to enjoy canoe/kayak camping. Novices need not be intimidated by primitive camping conditions. The evening camping will be at a campground with full toilet and shower facilities. However, since the intention is to learn how to do wilderness camping, all participants will be transporting their own camping, cooking and food gear with them in their boats. We intend to paddle an interesting stretch of the Juniata River, from Mcveytown to Cuba Mills. This includes the The Narrows below Lewistown and a stop at the recently restored Pennsylvania Canal Lift Lock No. 13. Please sign up early if you intend to participate, as campground reservations need to be made for the group. |
