Canals and Canal Life in and around the Susquehanna River Basin
Date: Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at 7:00 pm
DATE: Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at 7:00 pm
LOCATION: Riverside Methodist Church
PROGRAM: Canals and Canal Life in and around the Susquehanna River Basin

Have you ever wondered who built the stone walls along the banks of the Swatara Creek? Or have you noticed the still evident shallow canal along the west side of Wildwood Lake? Several of our local waterways once played host to an interesting part of our nation's history. Canals once crisscrossed Central Pennsylvania. They carried freight & passengers and their history is filled with interesting stories of the people who built, worked and traveled on them.

Steve Runkle is a local historian who has documented much of Pennsylvania's canal history. As a retired Hydraulic Engineer and Engineering Supervisor (formerly with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection) and one who has also served as an independent contractor with the Susquehanna River Basin Commission, he has a keen interest in preserving the memory of the canals. His presentation includes an overview of the region's canals and their engineering and construction. Along with a collection of photographs, diagrams and statistics, Steve also has a wealth of interesting anecdotes about life on the canals.

Come to this presentation and learn how the local canals connected Central Pennsylvania to Philadelphia, Baltimore & New York and helped change this area from a rural frontier region to bustling centers of commerce.

“Way Down Upon the Swanee River…”
DATE: Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at 7:00 pm
LOCATION: Riverside Methodist Church
PROGRAM: Florida’s Suwannee River

Stephen Foster never experienced the southeastern US river he made famous (though misspelled) through the lyrics of his song “Old Folks at Home”, but now’s your chance to do just that!

Join us at 7pm on Wednesday, March 5, as Mary Klaue (trip leader), Barb Horst, Karl Martz and Larry Beyer share memories of their trip on the Suwannee River in February 2007. The highlight of the presentation will be their digital photo slide show of the trip and their accompanying descriptive comments. The trip planning materials and information will be on display along with some collected mementos. As a bonus, a second slide show will be presented (as time and the will of the audience permit) on this year's Suwannee River trip by Mary Klaue, Barb Horst, Bob Michener, and Larry Beyer.

“Way down upon the Swanee River
Far, far away
There’s where my heart is turning ever
There’s where the old folks stay….”
